Every spring around this time we order some chicks from Hoover’s Hatchery. This year we ordered Black Sex Links (Sex links are a special crossbred with which you can tell what ones are hens and what ones are roosters by their colors.) which should arrive around my birthday March 17th. To prepare for our new arrivals this is what we did. First we found an old stock tank and covered the bottom with wood chips about an inch thick. It was important that it was chips and not dust because chicks will try and eat the dust. After that we found a chick waterer and feeder and put them in. Then we found a heating lamp and bought a bulb and chick feed. We then set everything up and we are waiting. When chicks get to your home the first thing to do is teach them how to drink. you do this by gently dipping their beak into the water and making them swallow it. Often this only has to be done once but sometimes there is a chick or two that need a few drinks before they get the hang of it. After their first drink they’re good. Just keep them supplied with fresh food and water daily and they will grow up to lay lots of good eggs.
EASTER MORNING ON THE FARM: BY ROSIE HIPPS
Every Easter we have a sunrise service, where we invite friends and family to watch the sun rise over the horizon and remember that blessed day 2,000 years ago when Jesus rose from the dead to the same sun. After the sun pokes up we read a passage from scripture and tramp inside for a hot pancake breakfast. The rest of the day is spent visiting and playing soccer and other games. My favorite part of Easter isn’t the games or breakfast or hanging out with my friends, it is sitting there on hay or a bench looking at that horizon thinking about that beautiful day when the stone rolled away to reveal a alive Christ standing in glory for he had saved the world. And you know What Jesus is the best hero in all of the books. Because he did the unthinkable, he went and died as a perfect man to save us dirty sinners. And that is the magic of Easter.
